Lincoln White House porcelain dinner plate, 1861
The Lincolns continued as White House practice of purchasing china for state dinners, by Mary Todd Lincoln was the first first lady to make the purchase herself. Early in 1861, she selected a pattern made by Haviland & Co. of Paris, France, which became known as "Royal Purple" and was decorated by E.V. Haughwout & Co. in New York City.
