2013 Breaking News: A Son's Sorrow:
Photographer Rodrigo Abd found the story of the Syrian civil war in the face of a child.
At a graveyard in the rebel stronghold of Idlib, Abd joined mourners who came to bury husbands and fathers killed by government troops. As family members wailed, Adb photographed a grief-stricken boy in the crowd. The boy's name was Ahmed, and his father had been killed by a sniper.
Government troops began closing in on Idlib. Fearing he would be captured or killed, Abd crept in the darkness past government checkpoints to flee to safety in Turkey.
Adb was one of five Associated Press photographers who shared the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage in Syria. "For me, it was really important to put a face on the casualties," he said. "How they suffer, how they cry because of this conflict."
