Hood's Tennessee Campaign:
Hoping to force Sherman out of Georgia by disrupting his supply lines, Hood led his Confederates through Georgia and Alabama before advancing to Nashville, Tennessee. Following a costly battle at Franklin on November 30, Hood's troops took up positions outside Nashville and constructed defenses. On December 15-16, however, Federal forces under Gen. George H. Thomas crushed Hood's army. The remnants withdrew to Tupelo, Mississippi.
