In 1873, the Southern Paiutes were ordered by the federal government onto a small reservation on the upper Muddy River. Confined to a mere 1000 acres, the Nuwuvi no longer could pursue their traditional hunting and gathering, so well adapted to their desert homeland. Moapa Paiutes learned to farm, and their beautiful baskets became popular tourist wares.
