- Description of Pictures: Book Talk: Recovering Face & the Politics of Joking
by Embassy of the Czech Republic
The Embassy of the Czech Republic will host a talk on two books, Recovering Face and The Politics of Joking, with author and esteemed cultural anthropologist Dr. Jana Kopelent-Rehak at the Czech Embassy on Friday, September 16, 2022, at 6 pm.
Dr. Kopelent-Rehak will discuss stories of men and women who survived Czechoslovakian concentration camps under the Communist regime and how the post-totalitarian state and society is coming to reconciliation with the crimes committed. Next, she will explore how humor, used as political expression, can provide a powerful critique, a non-violent form of political protest and the space for restoration of human dignity.
The event is part of the Mutual Inspirations Festival 2022. For more information, please visit www.mutualinspirations.org.
About Dr. Jana Kopelent-Rehak:
Dr. Jana Kopelent-Rehak, cultural anthropologist, photographer and filmmaker is currently a faculty at the University of Maryland and at Johns Hopkins University. Her research embraces a range of issues such as social ecology and climate, urban social inequality, political violence, and social suffering. Her most recent work resulting in upcoming book We Live in the Water is examining changing socioecology on Smith Island in Maryland, with a focus on climate, heritage, and aging. Her urban anthropology work is based on an engagement with communities in Baltimore, addressing urban environment, public art, housing, and health. In the Czech Republic, she worked with ecological refugees from Chernobyl and published a book Recovering Face (Rehak2012) about Czech Political Prisoners, addressing social processes in post-socialist Central Eastern Europe, followed by co-collaborative publication The Politics of Joking (Kopelent-Rehak and Trnka 2019) is an original contribution to an anthropological study of humor in political life.

Feel free to use in publications and pages with attribution but you don't have permission to sell the photos themselves. A free copy of any printed publication using any photographs is requested. Descriptive text, if any, is from a mixture of sources, quite frequently from signs at the location or from official web sites; copyrights, if any, are retained by their original owners.
- Accessing as Spider: The system has identified your IP as being a spider.
IP Address: 3.145.152.98 -- Domain: Amazon Technologies
I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.

- Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
- FACE_220916_033.JPG: Jana Kopelent-Rehak
- FACE_220916_054.JPG: This book is the story of men and women who survived Czechoslovakian Communist concentration camps.
- FACE_220916_068.JPG: Men and women disappeared, were arrested, imprisoned, interrogated, tortured, put on trial, convicted and sentenced to forced labor camps. In 1948 in Czechoslovakia "political others" became political prisoners.
- FACE_220916_077.JPG: They call themselves Mukl/Muklene(s) -- a man/woman selected for "liquidation" (in Czech language -- muz/zena urceny/a k likvidaci).
In 1948 the StB (State Secret Police) had arrested them. Their lives had been controlled by the State until 1989.
- FACE_220916_080.JPG: In the summer 1995 I found myself in Prague looking closely at the faces of people on the streets. I asked myself questions about "their," "our," memories of the oppression under socialism.
- FACE_220916_088.JPG: Owners of Pain
One Sunday morning in Cafe Ganys, I noticed a small group of older men. The questions I'd been asking in the streets about faces and memories came to rest on them; I wanted to find out who they were.

* Defacement and Social Visibility
* State Violent Rituals and Subjectivity
* Citizenship, Kinship and Violence
* Political Fiction and Archive
- FACE_220916_151.JPG: Face
Face, as I see it, is a powerful means of communication which possesses the potential to restore social visibility. In this context, Mukl's lost face, made invisible by the regime, always held the possibility for recovery.
