Description of Pictures: “Unexpected Conversations,” Friday, Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. EST:
The night before doors open, everyone is invited to take a seat at the live-streamed virtual table to join in a wildly unconventional sharing of bold ideas to change the future, with special guests from the worlds of music, art, science and activism. Hear from Bill Nye; Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch; actor/comedian, author and former White House staffer Kal Penn; environmental advocate drag queen Pattie Gonia; 2021 National Spelling Bee champion Zaila Avant-garde; co-executive producer of the HBO Max series Legendary and ballroom icon Jack Mizrahi; and R&B artist Mariah the Scientist.
Parts that I caught:
* Lonnie Bunch interviewing Bill Nye
* Bill Nye interviewing Zaila Avant-garde
* Zaila Avant-garde interviewing Kal Penn
* Kal Penn interviewing Pattie Gonia
* Pattie Gonia interviewing Jack Mizrahi
* Jack Mizrahi interviewing Mariah the Scientist
* G. Yamazawa (poet)
* Rachel Goslins (Director of the Arts and Industries Building)
Also seen here are David Rubenstein, Robin Bell, and Soo Soony Park (who did the "Expanded Present" installation outside of the building)

Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
FUTUUC_211119_0068.JPG: The Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building has reopened temporarily for a new exhibit called FUTURES. The exhibit, focusing on the future instead of the Smithsonian's normal focus on the past, runs until July 6.

The historic Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building (AIB) has been an incubator for ideas since it opened in 1881. Crossing its threshold is a kind of time travel: both back to the early years of the Smithsonian, and ahead to the FUTURES. To mark your crossing, Soo Sunny Park has responded to the building's brickwork architecture to create Expanded Present.
Using dichroic glass, a material invented by NASA, Expanded Present reacts to the natural conditions of the sunlight. As the hours, weeks, and seasons pass, and the sun changes position in the sky, the installation responds with different colors of light. Each moment is like a visual time stamp: a unique impression of color and pattern. During its nine-month installation, Expanded Present will look different to every person who looks at it -- just like the future itself.

2021 photos: This year, which started with former child president's attempted coup and the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, gradually got better.
Trips this year:
(May, October) After getting fully vaccinated, I made two trips down to Asheville, NC to visit my dad and his wife Dixie, and
(mid-July) I made a quick trip up to Stockbridge, MA to see the Norman Rockwell Museum again as well as Daniel Chester French's place @ Chesterwood.
Equipment this year: I continued to use my Fuji XS-1 cameras but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000.
Number of photos taken this year: about 283,000, up slightly from 2020 levels but still really low.
