Description of Pictures: Juneteenth Lighting for Freedom and Justice
June 15-19, 2021 | 9:00pm
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This year Washington National Cathedral will light the west façade in celebration and in honor of Juneteenth.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers made it to Galveston, TX with news that the enslaved were now free. Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day, is a celebration of African-American freedom and achievement.
At the Cathedral, has a house of prayer for all people, we strive to serve God and our neighbors as agents of reconciliation and a trusted voice of moral leadership. We commit to the work of building the beloved community and ending racism. We strive to build a community where all, as children of God, are judged as equals. Join as we celebrate this joyous day of liberation and work towards a just and equitable world for all.
When visiting the Cathedral grounds, please wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.

Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
JUNET_210615_001.JPG: Due to a heavy rain the night before, they had to do the illumination set-up on the day of the event.
JUNET_210615_028.JPG: Liz Coco from Atmosphere, Inc. talked to me about the lighting while she was working remotely from the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC
JUNET_210615_032.JPG: Liz and Logan from Atmosphere, Inc.
JUNET_210615_071.JPG: Gobos are small stencilled circular discs that are used in lighting installations to create a projected image or pattern. These are standardized things that are kept in inventory. That's why they could be set up early for the Pride illumination. The name, BTW, stands for "go between optics" which just means they're placed over the lights. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobo_(lighting)
JUNET_210615_219.JPG: Eric from Atmosphere, Inc.
JUNET_210615_446.JPG: Ivan from Atmosphere, Inc.
JUNET_210615_582.JPG: The Washington National Cathedral commemorated Juneteenth with another illumination, which was shown from June 15-19, 2021.

2021 photos: This year was filled with hope. Yes, the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us but it was hoped that restoring sanity to the White House. the rapid vaccine role-out, and a government that finally cared would put things back to normal again. But the force was strong in the evil anti-vaxxer movement and the virus variants made quick use of that so we're still dealing with this crap. Plus the continued impact of the Trump putsch attempt... Sigh.
Trips this year:
(May, October) After getting fully vaccinated, I made two trips down to Asheville, NC to visit my dad and his wife Dixie, and
(mid-July) I made a quick trip up to Stockbridge, MA to see the Norman Rockwell Museum again as well as Daniel Chester French's place @ Chesterwood.
Number of photos taken this year: about 283,000, slightly up from 2020 but still really low.
