![As I walked, I ran into one Trumpster with his "Appeal to Heaven" flag and "Demand Justice" signs. He wasn't wearing a mask of course but wore a paper hat saying "Vote for Trump" and the other side had a "I Voted" sticker.
Being an atheist, I always tune out when someone says the word "heaven", thinking it was some religious sentiment. I guess I didn't read enough American Revolution history -- it has nothing to do with religion and is in fact a call to revolution. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Tree_Flag ,
The phrase is a particular expression of the right of revolution used by British philosopher John Locke in chapter 14 of his Second Treatise on Civil Government which was published in 1690 as part of Two Treatises of Government refuting the theory of the divine right of kings.[10]
"And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment. And therefore, though the people cannot be judge, so as to have, by the constitution of that society, any superior power, to determine and give effective sentence in the case; yet they have, by a law antecedent and paramount to all positive laws of men, reserved that ultimate determination to themselves which belongs to all mankind, where there lies no appeal on earth, viz. to judge, whether they have just cause to make their appeal to heaven."[11]
Locke's works were well-known and frequently quoted by colonial leaders, being the most quoted authority on the government in the 1760-1776 period prior to American independence. Thomas Jefferson was accused of plagiarizing Locke in certain sections of the Declaration of Independence by fellow Virginian delegate Richard Henry Lee.[12]
Prior to Colonel Reed's suggestion and Massachusetts General Court establishing the Pine Tree flag as the standard of the Massachusetts navy, "an appeal to Heaven" or similar expressions had been invoked by the Massachusetts Provincial Congress in several resolutions, Patrick Henry in his Liberty or Death speech, and the Second Continental Congress in the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms. Subsequently, it was used again by the Second Continental Congress in the Declaration of Independence.
He was yelling that Trump wasn't being properly judged for his actions. I talked to him and he was fairly nice. I asked him if he was a QAnon person and, believe it or not, he said he had never heard of them. What?
He apologized for being incoherent because he had driven up from Florida that day (I was talking to him at 3pm) and he had had very little sleep. He said that when he voted in Florida, he had to show a picture ID so his vote was legitimate. But he said in Georgia, they had quickly changed rules to allow people to vote absentee and of course cheating was rampant there.
(I checked afterward and, as far as I could tell, Georgia's in-person and absentee ballot requirements were identical to Florida's. GOP governments in both states had engaged in major voter suppression attempts but I guess they weren't as effective in Georgia. They'll obviously be ramping up those efforts for next time.)
I told him that there was only one proven case of someone trying to steal the 2020 election and it was his guy. He disagreed but didn't blow up or anything.](/Graphlib/GraphData21.nsf/Images/2021_DC_Losers_Misc_0160/$File/L2021M_210114_079.JPG) |
