To learn more about the fence replacements project, please visit go.nps.gov/whitehousefence
The design and materials of the White House fence have evolved over the past two centuries. The first perimeter fence was a wood rail fence constructed during Thomas Jefferson's presidency around 1801. Later, he created additional privacy by replacing the original wooden rail structure with a stone wall. In 1818, beautiful iron gates and railings were added to the north front. The structures created an elegant facade along Pennsylvania Avenue when they were completed in 1819.

Although the design, materials, and location of the White House fence have evolved over the past two centuries, the fence has retained its current configuration since 1947. The United States Secret Service and National Park Service began planning for a new fence in 2014. Construction began in July 2019 and is expected to continue into 2021.

The White House fence is being replaced to meet modern security needs. The current 6'6" fence will be replaced by an approximately 13' fence with anti-climb and intrusion detection technology. The design supports the aesthetic and historic preservation mission of the National Park Service and maintains iconic views and photo opportunities for visitors.
