Description of Pictures: Suffragists at the White House
The White House Historical Association invites you to attend the second of the 2019 Lecture Series, White House History with Ann Compton.
Suffragists at the White House will be hosted in conjunction with the Supreme Court Historical Society and the U.S. Capitol Historical Society as a part of the National Heritage Lecture and will cover the history of women’s suffrage in the United States. From the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 to the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920—allowing women the right to vote—the Executive Mansion played a major role as the fulcrum for first amendment activity.
After sixty years of relentless campaigning by women’s suffrage organizations, by 1913 only six states allowed women the right to vote. Alice Paul arrived in Washington, D.C., and planned an ambitious protest on Pennsylvania Avenue the day before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration—marking a pivotal moment in suffrage movement. As we approach the centennial of the 19th Amendment, author of Suffragists in Washington, DC: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote, Rebecca Roberts will explore this timely and engaging moment in the history of gender equality.

SUFF1_190625_506.JPG: To the Russian Envoys
President Wilson and Envoy Root are deceiving Russia. They say we are a democracy. Help us win a world war, so that democracies may survive.
We, the women of America tell you that America is not a democracy. Twenty million American Women are denied the right to vote. President Wilson is the chief opponent of their national enfranchisement. Help us make this nation really free. Tell our government that it must liberate its people before it can claim free Russia as an ally.
SUFF1_190625_519.JPG: Kaiser Wilson
Have you forgotten your sympathy with the poor Germans because they were not self-governed?
20,000,000 American women are not self-governed.
Take the beam out of your own eye.
SUFF1_190625_553.JPG: President Wilson is deceiving the world when he appears as the prophet of democracy.
President Wilson has opposed those who demand democracy for this country.
He is responsible for the disenfranchisement of millions of Americans.
We in America know this.
The world will find him out.
