A writer and lawyer, Robertson has been researching the Lizzie Borden case since she was a senior at Harvard; she published her first paper on the trial in the Yale Journal of Law and the Humanities in 1997. Separating facts from the many myths that surround the grisly 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, Robertson draws almost exclusively on primary sources, including trial transcripts, contemporary accounts, and recently discovered letters from Lizzie. Her meticulous examination of the case emphasizes how the social expectations and biases of the Gilded Age influenced Lizzie’s treatment and set the stage for the enduring legend Borden has become.
