100th Anniversary
The first and most famous of several screen adaptations of the 1900 novel by Finnish writer Johannes Linnankoski, SONG OF THE SCARLET FLOWER is a touchstone film of the silent era's golden age in Sweden, showcasing stunning outdoor scenery during the season of the midnight sun; the folk customs of the farmers and foresters of the rugged northlands; young star Lars Hanson, in top form as a callow, heartbreaking youth who learns some hard truths about life and love; and the sure-handed direction of Mauritz Stiller, entering the peak years of his career, and a run of films that would soon get him and his young protégé Greta Garbo noticed by Hollywood. Screenings November 24–26 will feature the original Armas Järnefelt orchestral score, considered second only to Johan Sibelius among Finnish composers, performed by the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jaakko Kuusisto. DIR/SCR Mauritz Stiller; SCR Gustaf Molander, from the novel "Laulu Tulipunaisesta Kukasta" by Johannes Linnankoski. Sweden, 1919, b&w with tinting and toning, 101 min. Silent with English intertitles. NOT RATED
