Description of Pictures: Monica Hesse, James Swanson -- Hesse's "The War Outside" is set in a WWII internment camp, where a German girl and a Japanese girl become secret friends. In Swanson's "Chasing King's Killer," James Earl Ray learns of Dr. Martin Luther King's plan to travel to a March in Memphis. He finds a boarding house near Dr. King's motel and sets up the location where he will commit a terrible crime.

Monica Hesse made her young adult fiction debut with “Girl in the Blue Coat,” which was named an Entertainment Weekly Best Book of 2016 and won the Edgar Award for mystery writing. In 2017, she further established her writing career with “American Fire,” published for the adult non-fiction audience. In a rave review, The New York Times said Hesse “has talent to burn.” With “The War Outside,” a timely and important look into a terrible part of America’s past, Hesse uses her expert research acumen to prove she is on the literary scene to stay.

James L. Swanson is the award-winning author of the best-seller “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer.” His other books include “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer,” an adaptation of “Manhunt” for young adults, and his follow-up, “The President Has Been Shot!: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy,” which was a finalist for the YALSA-ALA Excellence in Young Adult Nonfiction award. He will be speaking about “Chasing King’s Killer: The Hunt for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Assassin.”
James has held a number of government and think-tank posts in Washington, D.C.

(August) Asheville, NC to visit Dad and his wife Dixie.
Equipment this year: I continued to use my Fuji XS-1 cameras but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000.
Number of photos taken this year: about 582,000.
