- Description of Pictures: In Memoriam: Senator John S. McCain III
August 27, 2018 – September 9, 2018
The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery recognizes the life and legacy of late Senator and former presidential nominee John S. McCain III with a photograph by the British-born photographer Steve Pyke.
McCain, who was born in 1936, was an established politician and Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. Before entering politics, he demonstrated great commitment to his country by enduring five and a half years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War. Following his release from prison in 1973, he later relocated to Arizona where he began a career in politics. A long-time Republican, McCain was the winner of the party’s presidential nomination in 2008. His lifetime commitment to public service is marked by his two years in the House of Representatives and his work as a six-term elected senator of Arizona. He also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. Despite his battle with brain cancer, McCain served in the Senate until his death. He is succeeded by his wife and seven children.
This portrait of the late Senator was taken in 2005 by Steve Pyke, who at the time was a staff photographer for the New Yorker. Pyke gained wide recognition while working for leading publications in the 1980s and is known for having a distinctive, close-up portrait style. Commenting on the relationship between photographer and sitter, Pyke has said, “That encounter, that exchange, is often brief, but the image which we make of those moments can be the way a person is remembered beyond their own lifetime, remaining long after the voice has been forgotten,” (New York City, 2007).
Pyke’s work was featured in the Portrait Gallery’s Portraiture Now: Feature Photography exhibition in 2008, and he is represented in the museum’s permanent collection.

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.

- MCCAIN_180901_01.JPG: John McCain, 1936-2018
In his concession speech following the 2008 presidential election, longtime Arizona Senator John McCain conveyed his faith in the people of the United States: "Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history." Having served in office from 1983 to his death on August 25, 2018, McCain -- branded a "maverick" -- will be remembered for his characteristic optimism and for choosing to follow his conscience, even when his beliefs conflicted with those of his fellow Republican Party members.
Before entering into the political arena, McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a Navy fighter pilot. In 1967, while flying combat missions in the Vietnam War, his plane was shot down and he was severely injured. As a prisoner of war, he endured more than five years of torture and was considered a national hero upon his return home in 1973. McCain won numerous accolades, including such international honors as Georgia's Order of National Hero, an award typically given o Georgian citizens.
