Dave Roman and Alexis Frederick-Frost: Comics Character Team Up
Join author Dave Roman ("Astronaut Academy," "Teen Boat") and Alexis Frederick-Frost ("Adventures in Cartooning") for an interactive workshop that’s all about developing unique characters and collaborating with fellow artists to create unexpected comic stories full of twists and turns.
Dave Roman & Alexis Frederick-Frost are award winning cartoonists who publish graphic novels for First Second books and also once saved the planet from colliding with a rogue asteroid. They always appreciate when people show up to their events with carnitas tacos and coconut smoothies.

Timothy Young: 3 Different Ways to Design and Create Cool Creatures & Characters
Learn to draw creatures and characters using three different techniques: Doodling, Sketching and Scribbling.
Timothy Young has had a long career doing all kinds of interesting and fun stuff. He’s been an animator, puppet maker, toy designer, sculptor, art director and graphic designer. His career highlights include being Head Model-Maker for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, designing and building Muppets for Jim Henson and sculpting the first Simpsons toys. Now he is the author/illustrator of six picture books and the illustrator of two others. Tim’s two new books out in 2017 include "Creatures and Characters," a How-To-Draw book.
Fred Bowen: Journal Writing for Young Sports Fans
Be a sportswriter. Cover your own team or even a pro team. Discover more about your sport, yourself and the joy of writing. And create a memory book you’ll want to have your whole life. We’ll supply the journals. Fred Bowen, Washington Post/KidsPost sports columnist and author of "Quarterback Season" (about a kid who keeps a journal) will provide tips and advice. You’ll learn what to put in your journal (rosters, game schedules) and how to think and write in new ways about the games you play and love. And you'll have fun too!
Fred Bowen has been writing the Washington Post/KidsPost sports column for 17 years. The column appears in the paper and online every Thursday. He is also the author of 22 sports novels for ages 8 and up, including "Quarterback Season," which is about an 8th grader who has to keep a journal for school and decides to write about his football team. The season and the assignment take a lot of interesting twists and turns. Bowen was a Little Leaguer who loved to read, and he is dedicated to hooking today’s young sports fans on the joys of reading and writing about sports.
Jocquelyn Downs: Fiction and Fun!
Do you like writing fantasy? Realistic fiction? Or are dystopian worlds more your style? If so, then this workshop is for you. Writers will be encouraged to create a piece of fiction through original Writopia creative writing games while getting stellar feedback from published authors trained in our method. At the end of the workshop, writers are encouraged to read their work and receive constructive feedback from fellow writers and instructors.
Jocquelyn Downs is a writer, filmmaker, educator, spoken word artist and serves as Regional Manager for Writopia Lab. She has been working closely with students on their creative writing for 10 years. She has led directing workshops at high schools in the Washington, D.C. area, and has worked as a dramatic arts teaching artist for the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop in Washington D.C.
Recognize anyone? If you recognize specific folks (or other stuff) and I haven't labeled them, please identify them for the world. Click the little pencil icon underneath the file name (just above the picture). Spammers need not apply.
Copyrights: All pictures were taken by amateur photographer Bruce Guthrie (me!) who retains copyright on them. Free for non-commercial use with attribution. See the [Creative Commons] definition of what this means. "Photos (c) Bruce Guthrie" is fine for attribution. (Commercial use folks including AI scrapers can of course contact me.) Feel free to use in publications and pages with attribution but you don't have permission to sell the photos themselves. A free copy of any printed publication using any photographs is requested. Descriptive text, if any, is from a mixture of sources, quite frequently from signs at the location or from official web sites; copyrights, if any, are retained by their original owners.
Spiders: The system has identified your IP as being a spider. I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, a number of options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm excited for your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. " ") are described as follows:

Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to email@example.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.
Featured Folk: Some of the people here can also be seen on other pages on this site.
