Description of Pictures: The 2017 Pulitzer Prize–Winning Editorial Cartoons Of Jim Morin
"You Can Disagree With Something I Do, Or You Can Agree With Something I Do. If It Inspires You To Start Talking About It Or To Start Caring About It, Then I’Ve Done My Job.”
— Editorial Cartoonist Jim Morin
Miami Herald editorial cartoonist Jim Morin has satirized presidents from Richard M. Nixon to Donald J. Trump. In 2017, Morin won his second Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning for his take on campaign 2016, and other issues of the year, including race, gun violence and fake news. Morin first won the award in 1996. His cartoons were also part of the Herald’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize win for editorial writing.
Morin began drawing cartoons at age 7, inspired by Saturday morning television. Fueled by the turmoil of the Watergate era, Morin published his first political cartoons in college. He joined the Miami Herald in 1978.
Morin draws 250 cartoons a year. “The only thing I’m after is to find out something that’s wrong, some injustice and put it out there, stir up the pot and inspire debate.”

NEWMOR_171001_026.JPG: Global Crises:
Morin's cartoons captured a wide range of world events in 2016, from the United Kingdom's controversial "Brexit" vote to leave the European Union to the war in Syria and the death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. One cartoon uses an iconic image of a wounded Syrian boy to answer U.S. presidential candidate Gary Johnson's blundering question, "What is Aleppo?"
NEWMOR_171001_033.JPG: Taking on Trump:
From the early days of his campaign for the presidency to election night, Donald J. Trump was a target of Morin's edgy humor. Morin drew the billionaire candidate as a cherry tree -- cutting George Washington and lampooned the FBI's alleged role in Trump's victory.

NEWMOR_171001_064.JPG: Presidential Campaign:
The divisive 2016 presidential campaign provided Morin with plenty of material, from bickering within the Republican Party to the scandal surrounding Hillary Clinton's emails. One of Morin's favorite shows Republican candidates Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina in a parody of the classic Grant Wood painting "American Gothic."

NEWMOR_171001_079.JPG: American Controversies:
In 2016, heated debates over gun violence, racism, fake news, and "bathroom bills" restricting access to restrooms by transgender people inspired thought-provoking cartoons from Morin. "What political cartoons can do that nothing else in a newspaper can do is to crystallize an issue into one visual image in such a way that the reader cannot forget it," says Morin.

2017 photos: Equipment this year: I continued to use my Fuji XS-1 cameras but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000.
Trips this year:
Civil War Trust conferences in Pensacola, FL, Chattanooga, TN (via sites in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee) and Fredericksburg, VA,
a family reunion in The Dells, Wisconsin (via sites in Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin),
New York City, and
my 12th consecutive San Diego Comic Con trip (including sites in Arizona).
For some reason, several of my photos have been published in physical books this year which is pretty cool. Ones that I know about:
"Tarzan, Jungle King of Popular Culture" (David Lemmo),
"The Great Crusade: A Guide to World War I American Expeditionary Forces Battlefields and Sites" (Stephen T. Powers and Kevin Dennehy),
"The American Spirit" (David McCullough),
"Civil War Battlefields: Walking the Trails of History" (David T. Gilbert),
"The Year I Was Peter the Great: 1956 — Khrushchev, Stalin's Ghost, and a Young American in Russia" (Marvin Kalb), and
"The Judge: 26 Machiavellian Lessons" (Ron Collins and David Skover).
Number of photos taken this year: just below 560,000.
