I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.

Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
SCXBRA_160222_09.JPG: Bound for Brazil: Charles Evans Hughes' Diplomatic Trip
Between his two tenures on the Supreme Court, Charles Evans Hughes (portrait on wall to left) held several positions. From 1921 to 1924, he was Secretary of State under President Warren G. Harding. On August 24, 1922, Secretary Hughes departed New York City on a diplomatic mission to attend an exposition celebrating the centennial of Brazil's independence in Rio de Janeiro. Among the official policy (photo above) were Hughes' wife, Antoinette, and their elder daughter, Catherine. Sailing on the ocean liner Pan American, they made the nearly 5,000 mile journey in just under 12 days. Today, non-stop flights make the trip in about 10 hours!
SCXBRA_160222_19.JPG: Secretary Hughes was presented with a certificate (left) naming him a "Special Ambassador" to the Exposition and a gold medal (above). The trip was noteworthy for relations between Brazil and the United States because it recalled the visit of Emperor Dom Pedro II to the 1876 centennial exposition of the United States.
SCXBRA_160222_31.JPG: Secretary of State Hughes inspecting the crew of the USS Maryland
SCXBRA_160222_37.JPG: On the return voyage, the Maryland crossed the equator. In keeping with Navy tradition, a "crossing the line" ceremony was held. All those onboard who had not crossed the equator before (known as "pollywogs") were called before King Neptune to be inducted into his realm. Several "wogs" were reportedly tossed in a tub of salt water, but Secretary Hughes escaped unscathed and received his "shellback" certificate (right).
SCXBRA_160222_43.JPG: During the visit, Hughes was recalled to Washington earlier than scheduled. His party boarded the USS Maryland (BB-46) for the return trip. Running at high speed, the ship raced northward and completed the journey in 10 days and 18 hours, setting a new record. To commemorate the event, the crew presented Hughes with a ship's plaque etched with the dates of the momentous voyage (right).

Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.
