NEWJOH_160606_06.JPG: The Editorial Cartoons of Jack Ohman:
For more than 35 years, Sacramento Bee editorial cartoonist Jack Ohman has skewered the powerful, from his high school principal to Barack Obama. In 2016, Ohman was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning for his cartoons covering terrorism, mass shootings and the presidential election.
At age 19, Ohman became the youngest cartoonist ever to be nationally syndicated. His work appears in more than 200 newspapers worldwide.
Offering both humor and unflinching commentary, editorial cartoons often express ideas that words alone cannot.
NEWJOH_160606_07.JPG: World in Crisis:
From the Syrian refugee crisis and US military action in the Middle East to the deadly attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, global turmoul inspired several provocative cartoons by Ohman in 2015.
NEWJOH_160606_11.JPG: ... show me the page where it says, "Kill cartoonists..."
NEWJOH_160606_14.JPG: OK. We get it. You're serious about ISIS...

NEWJOH_160606_21.JPG: "Shifting gears from a traditional amusing cartoon to one that has to strike the right note in times of tragedy is very difficult, because I am fighting my own emotions to draw a cartoon that resonates properly."
-- Editorial cartoonist, Jack Ohman
NEWJOH_160606_23.JPG: American Controversies:
National debates over race, the Confederate flag and marriage equality inspired several thought-provoking cartoons. Ohman's cartoon about a massacre at a South Carolina church got a strong response on social media. A gun owner, Ohman says, "I know that the right to keep and bear arms is an important part of the US Constitution. I also know that the founders could not have possibly envisioned the kind of arms we have today."

NEWJOH_160606_29.JPG: The Lessons of Ferguson (select one)
A. Excessive force must not be used, and all races must try harder to get along together.
B. Get it on video.

NEWJOH_160606_43.JPG: Vaccines are prepared at Area 51 by reverse-engineered alien technology on orders from the Trilateral Commission, then delivered in black helicopters under the UN's "Agenda 21" mandates...
... but that's just my personal belief.
NEWJOH_160606_46.JPG: California Issues:
Closer to home, Ohman tackled California politics and almond growers, whose heavy water use came under attack in the drought-stricken state. California Gov. Jerry Brown and Brown's beloved pet corgi Sutter -- a popular social media personality -- were also targets of Ohman's razor-sharp wit in 2015.
NEWJOH_160606_50.JPG: The Trajectory of Sacramento Idealism
A young person is inspired to enter public service...
My hero!
He prepares diligently for his life's work.
How did a dog get into Yale Law School?
Stanford wait-listed me.
He acquires the look of a successful political candidate.
Ask not what your chew toy can do for you...
He wins the election!
I will change the political culture of Sacramento! Together we can make California great again!
But then he falls into bad habits...
That speech was inspirational!
Like JFK, FDR, and Snoopy!
He gets less idealistic...
Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong support of SB666, the "Strip Mine Yosemite Act of 2016".
He gets termed out...
... er, we prefer the term "advocate."
You look great in red!
The wages of sin is no debt!

The Ronald Reagan statue was dedicated last week in the lower rotunda of the capitol...
Fifty years from now, I wonder what the... Jerry Brown statue might look like?
Sculptors! Get out your bronze and clay! Let the competition begin!
I didn't know bronze could levitate...
Spaceship Sacramento. Heavy. (Will work for two parts hydrogen + one part oxygen).
"Adult in the room." Evocative!
Let off my lawn* * Dead
"The Engineer." I like it! But I have an untrained eye...
2065: The decision is made, and the grand unveiling takes place!
How do you like the lower rotunda?
I like it, but I miss Jerry!
NEWJOH_160606_64.JPG: Presidential Campaign:
The divisive presidential race provided rich fodder for Ohman, who lampooned the changing Republican Party, GOP hopefuls including Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
NEWJOH_160606_65.JPG: Children should be off-limits...
...except when you cut their benefits, deport them, or carpet-bomb them.
NEWJOH_160606_68.JPG: Look at this video I concocted!!!
I've seen the video! It has baby parts!!!
Because of the video, I'm voting to cut the funding for Planned Parenthood!!!
Someone should do something about Planned Parenthood!!!

Our critics are overreacting.

2016 photos: Equipment this year: I continued to use my Fuji XS-1 cameras but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000.
Seven relatively short trips this year:
two Civil War Trust conference (Gettysburg, PA and West Point, NY, with a side-trip to New York City),
my 11th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including sites in Utah, Nevada, and California),
a quick trip to Michigan for Uncle Wayne's funeral,
two additional trips to New York City, and
a Civil Rights site trip to Alabama during the November elections. Being in places where people died to preserve the rights of minority voters made the Trumputin election even more depressing.
Number of photos taken this year: just over 610,000.
