Description of Pictures: Joshua Foer, Dylan Thuras, and Ella Morton In Conversation with David Plotz
“Atlas Obscura may be the only thing that can still inspire me to leave my apartment.”
—Lena Dunham
Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide To The World’s Hidden Wonders is the definitive guide to the most astonishing, curious, unusual, off-the-beaten path destinations and secret marvels across the globe.
From the founders of AtlasObscura.com, Joshua Foer and Dylan Thuras, with co-author Ella Morton, this one-of-a-kind guide, complete with photographs, maps, and charts, shares over 700 of the most mysterious bucket-list wonders across all eight continents. Wonders include:
* A fire that’s been burning in the Turkmenistan desert for 40 years.
* Thousands of synchronized fireflies that inexplicably flash in unison in a cluster of mangrove trees outside Kuala Lumpur.
* The self-mummifying monks of Japan.
* The world’s only museum dedicated to displaying art made from human hair.
From the Glowworm Caves of New Zealand to the bioluminescent squid of Toyama Bay, each entry for the astonishing sites in Atlas Obscura includes location information and tips on when and how best to get there—and how much to bribe the guard to get you inside.
An immersive cabinet of curiosities that’s meant to inspire wonderlust as much as wanderlust by sharing places that could never be found without a tip from someone in the know, Atlas Obscura proves that the world is vast and there are marvelous treasures behind every corner—if you just know where to look.
Foer is the cofounder, chairman, and editor at large of AtlasObscura.com. He is the author of Moonwalking with Einstein and a forthcoming book about his travels with pygmies in the Congo.
Thuras is the cofounder and creative director of AtlasObscura.com. His pursuit of the unusual began as a teenager exploring abandoned buildings in the Midwest.
Morton has written for Slate, Condé Nast Traveler, and CNET. As the host of the travel show Rocketboom NYC, ...More...

Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.
2016 photos: Equipment this year: I continued to use my Fuji XS-1 cameras but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000.
Seven relatively short trips this year:
two Civil War Trust conference (Gettysburg, PA and West Point, NY, with a side-trip to New York City),
my 11th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including sites in Utah, Nevada, and California),
a quick trip to Michigan for Uncle Wayne's funeral,
two additional trips to New York City, and
a Civil Rights site trip to Alabama during the November elections. Being in places where people died to preserve the rights of minority voters made the Trumputin election even more depressing.
Number of photos taken this year: just over 610,000.
