Description of Pictures: On behalf of the Illinois State Society of Washington DC and the Abraham Lincoln Association, we invite you to celebrate Illinois Statehood Day with a visit by Illinois’s greatest citizen, Abraham Lincoln (in the person of renowned Lincoln presenter George Buss from Freeport, Illinois).
When Abraham Lincoln was a Member of the House of Representatives, the House Post Office was just off the old House chamber. Here Lincoln would pass time sharing stories with his fellow Congressmen and journalists. Majority Whip Steve Scalise now occupies this space and has named it the Lincoln Room.
The Abraham Lincoln Association (ALA) was founded in 1908 to lead the national effort to celebrate the centennial of Lincoln’s birth on February 12, 1909. It continues today to fulfill its ongoing mission: To observe each anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln; to preserve and make more readily accessible the landmarks associated with his life; and to actively encourage, promote and aid the collection and dissemination of authentic information regarding all phases of his life and career.
The Illinois State Society of Washington, DC (ISS), was founded in 1854. Its mission is to promote the history, culture, science, technology, and social traditions of Illinois to citizens in the greater D.C. Metro area. The Society sponsors numerous educational and social events throughout the year, each with an Illinois theme.
George Buss is a 6th generation Illinoisan who, for the past quarter century, has portrayed Abraham Lincoln for thousands of audiences across the United States to critical acclaim. George has had multiple appearances on C-Span and the Illinois Channel, was selected by the Illinois Sesquicentennial Debate Celebration to appear at all seven original debate locations, and has been featured in numerous national publications including Smithsonian. George now presents the Gettysburg Address at the Gettysburg National Cemetery annually.
