Description of Pictures: The Lost Bird Project

Location: Haupt Garden (south of Castle) and Bird Garden (northwest of Natural History)
Bronze memorials by Todd McGrain depict extinct species of North American birds: the great auk, Labrador duck, heath hen, and Carolina parakeet (Haupt Garden) and the passenger pigeon (Bird Garden). They are subtle, hopeful reminders of our duty to prevent further extinctions.

SIHGLB_141010_01.JPG: The Lost Bird Project Todd McGrain Sculptures The Lost Bird Project recognizes the tragedy of modern extinction by immortalizing North American birds that have been driven to extinction. To date, bronze memorials have been dedicated to the Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet, Labrador Duck, Great Auk, and Heath Hen. These sculptures compel us to recognize the finality of our loss. They ask us not to forget, and they remind us of our duty to prevent further extinction. Extinction of animals, plants, and other organisms caused by human actions can often be credited to habitat destruction resulting from deforestation and pollution. In addition, excessive hunting and fishing, the introduction of non-native species, and the transmission of diseases are also contributing factors.

It was a mile wide and 300 miles long and took 14 hours to pass a single point. Passenger Pigeon flocks were huge. They nested by the thousands in the vast unbroken stands of North American woodland, feeding on acorns and nuts. But as settlers moved across the continent and cleared the forests, they over-hunted the pigeons (as a food source and for sport) and removed large portions of the bird's habitat and food supplies. Passenger Pigeons (Ectopistes migratorius), once so astonishingly abundant that no natural predator could make a dent in their numbers, were surprisingly vulnerable to human intrusion. In 1914, the last Passenger Pigeon died in captivity. The story of the Passenger Pigeon's extinction reminds us that sometimes the world of nature is more fragile than we think.

The Enid A. Haupt Garden is a 4.2 acre public garden in the Smithsonian complex, adjacent to the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It was designed to be a modern representation of American Victorian gardens as they appeared in the mid to late 19th century. It replaced an existing Victorian Garden which had been built to celebrate the nation's Bicentennial in 1976.

History

The garden opened on May 21, 1987 as part of the redesigned Castle quadrangle. It is named for Enid A. Haupt, who provided the $3 million endowment which financed its construction and maintenance. Initially approached with a request that she finance a small Zen garden within the quadrangle, after a review of the plans Haupt said that she was "not interested in putting money into a Zen garden...I'm only interested in financing the whole thing."

The quadrangle redesign project and the Smithsonian Gardens more broadly were part of the vision of the eighth Secretary of the Smithsonian, S. Dillon Ripley, who felt that the museum experience should extend beyond the museums' buildings into the outdoor spaces.

The landscape design of the Garden featured the collaborative efforts of architect Jean Paul Carlhian, principal in the Boston firm of Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbott; Lester Collins, a landscape architect from Millbrook, New York; Sasaki Associates Inc. of Watertown, Massachusetts; and James R. Buckler, founding director of the Smithsonian's Office of Horticulture.

The central feature of the garden is a symmetrically patterned parterre, flanked by the Moongate Garden to the west and the Fountain Garden to the east. The parterre measures 144 feet long by 66 feet wide; the low-growing plants that fill out the series of diamonds, fleurs-de-lis, and scallops or swags that make up the design are changed every six months, typically in September and May.

Other notable design features include saucer and tulip magnolias, brick walkways, and historical cast-iron garden furnishings from the Smithsonian Gardens' Garden Furniture Collection.

2014 photos: Trips this year: three Civil War Trust conferences (Winchester, VA, Nashville, TN, and Atlanta, GA), Michigan to visit mom in the hospice before she died and then a return trip after she died, and my 9th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City, Sacramento, Oakland, and Los Angeles). Ego strokes: Paul Dickson used one of my photos as the author photo in his book "Aphorisms: Words Wrought by Writers". Equipment this year: I mostly used my Fuji XS-1 camera but, depending on the event, I also used a Nikon D7000. Number of photos taken this year: just over 470,000.
