The Newseum marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Medgar Evers with a special program looking back at his life and legacy.
Myrlie Evers, Medgar's widow and chair of the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute, will head a panel that also includes Julian Bond, former chairman of the NAACP, and Jerry Mitchell, an investigative reporter for The Clarion-Ledger, whose work in the 1990s helped convict the man who assassinated Evers.
Gwen Ifill, senior correspondent for "PBS NewsHour," will moderate the discussion.
In 1954, Medgar Evers became the first NAACP field secretary in Mississippi and initiated the integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962. He spearheaded demonstrations and boycotts of businesses that practiced racial discrimination and organized voter registrations for African Americans.
Evers was assassinated on June 12, 1963.
