The Magnetic Fields with Emma Straub
Saturday, November 17, 2012
Founded and led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt, the American indie-pop group has attracted a global following with their expert musicianship and captivating lyrics. While early recordings relied heavily on synthesized instrumentation, their best-known work, 1999's 69 Love Songs, a three-volume concept, featured a wider range of sounds and instruments.
The Magnetic Fields followed this up with a "no-synth" trilogy: i (2004), Distortion (2008), and Realism (2010). Filmed over a period of 10 years, Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields debuted in film festivals around the world in 2010, earning multiple awards. Merritt and company are hitting the road once again supporting their newest album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea.

Yemen Blues
Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Uniting traditional Yemenite melodies with the world of blues, jazz, and funk, Yemen Blues combines West African roots and enhanced modern compositions in a breathtaking mixture of beautiful, complex grooves.
"Yemen Blues hopscotched across cultures, often in mid-song. It could sound like an Arabic pop orchestra accompanying serpentine melodies, or a North African trance group, only to switch toward jazzy horn and flute solos or hints of chamber music." - The New York Times

Robert Pollin
In Conversation with Harold Meyerson
Tuesday, December 04, 2012
Full employment used to be an explicit goal of economic policy in most of the industrialized world. In Back to Full Employment, economist Robert Pollin argues that the U.S.--today faced with its highest level of unemployment since the Great Depression--should put full employment back on the agenda.
Full employment will promote equality and social stability as well as help end our dependence on fossil fuels and build an economy powered by clean energy.
Explaining views on full employment in macroeconomic theory from Marx to Keynes to Friedman, Pollin argues that the policy was abandoned in the 1970s for the wrong reasons, and he shows how it can be achieved today despite the challenges of inflation and globalization.
Pollin is Professor of Economics and Co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the author of Contours of Descent: U.S. Economic Fractures and the Landscape of Global Austerity.
Pollin will be in conversation with Harold Meyerson, Editor-at-Large of The American Prospect.

2012 photos: Equipment this year: My mainstays were the Fuji S100fs, Nikon D7000, and the new Fuji X-S1. I also used an underwater Fuji XP50 and a Nikon D600. The first three cameras all broke this year and had to be repaired.
Trips this year:
three Civil War Trust conferences (Shepherdstown, WV, Richmond, VA, and Williamsburg, VA),
a week-long family reunion cruise of the Caribbean,
another week-long family reunion in the Wisconsin Dells (with lots of in-transit time in Ohio and Indiana), and
my 7th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including side trips to Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon, etc).
Ego strokes: I had a picture of Miss DC, Ashley Boalch, published in the Washington Post. I had a photograph of the George Segal San Francisco Holocaust memorial used as the cover of Quebec Francais (issue 165). Not being able to read French, I'm not entirely sure what the article is about but, hey! And I guess what could be considered to be a positive thing, my site is now established enough that spammers have noticed it and I had to block 17,000 file description postings for Viagra and whatever else..
Number of photos taken this year: just below 410,000.
