From 1989 until the Fatwa against him was rescinded, Salman Rushdie disappeared into a pseudonym he created from the names of two writers he admired: Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov. His new memoir is an account of the nine years he lived in hiding, during which he was constantly moved from one safe house to the next. He lived under perpetual threat, endured the end of a marriage—yet continued writing, with no loss to the signature wit and dark humor that make his fiction so distinctive.
