Espionage played a central role, and America’s people were forced to face deep questions of loyalty and betrayal.

He brings to life a time when the penalty for spying was death, when Philadelphia and New York City were Tory strongholds, and when Long Islanders were forced to swear an oath by the “Almighty and Tremendous God” not to “convey any intelligence” to the British.
