Mary Chapin Carpenter To Be Honored at the Newseum:
WASHINGTON — Grammy Award-winning recording artist Mary Chapin Carpenter will receive the "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech in Music Award at the "Freedom Sings" celebration at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
"Freedom Sings" will include a conversation with Carpenter about her music and career and will feature performances by Judy Collins and Rodney Crowell.
"Ms. Carpenter is an artist in the truest sense of the word," said Americana Music Association executive director Jed Hilly. "With her live performance and studio albums, her music has touched and inspired so many. We are honored to bestow this prestigious award on her."
The award, sponsored by the Newseum’s First Amendment Center and the Americana Music Association, recognizes artists who have used their work to raise awareness and promote free speech through their music and other efforts.
"Mary Chapin Carpenter … has consistently written and performed songs that take a stand and reflect the human condition, while her activism outside of her art has also affected real change for real people," said Ken Paulson, president and chief operating officer at the Newseum and First Amendment Center.
In addition to Collins, past recipients of the music award include Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Charlie Daniels and Steve Earle.

2010 photos: Equipment this year: I mostly used the Fuji S100fs until the third one broke and I started sending them back for repairs. Then I used either the Fuji S200EHX or the Nikon D90 until I got the S100fs ones repaired. At the end of the year I bought a Nikon D5000 but I returned it pretty quickly.
Trips this year:
Civil War Trust conferences (Lexington, KY and Nashville, TN), and
my 5th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including Los Angeles).
My office at the main Commerce Department building closed in October and I was shifted out to the Bureau of the Census in Suitland Maryland. It's good to have a job of course but that killed being able to see basically any cultural events during the day. There's basically nothing of interest that you can see around the Census building.
Number of photos taken this year: about 395,000..
