Sam Donaldson, Douglas Brinkley, Martha Joynt Kumar join Marvin Kalb to Explore the Complicated Relationship between Reporters and Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama
WASHINGTON – From George Washington to Barack Obama, American presidents have led the country and the news cycle. The relationship between the press and the presidency has become an integral part of our democracy, linking the public and the Oval Office. Through the evolution of this interdependent relationship, the press has earned its title of The Fourth Estate – conveying policies, affecting agendas and helping to shape each president’s image and legacy. On the next edition of The Kalb Report, moderator Marvin Kalb will examine the history of the relationship between the press and our presidents with an expert panel including historians Douglas Brinkley and Martha Joynt Kumar, as well as ABC News Contributor Sam Donaldson. The forum will take place on Monday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. in the main ballroom of the National Press Club (529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C.).
"What did George Washington think of the press?” said Mr. Kalb. “What did Abe Lincoln think of inquisitive reporters during the Civil War? When did news conferences begin and why. No relationship is more consequential these days than the one between a president and the reporters who cover--and uncover--him. I can't wait for this program. It should be informative and fascinating."
“The relationship between the press and our presidents has been complicated and strained for more than 200 years and so far, it seems to have worked to the benefit of our democracy,” said Michael Freedman, executive director of the GW Global Media Institute. “Our students are in for a fun and educational evening about muckrakers, history makers and what it all teaches us going forward.”
The Kalb Report is produced by the GW Global Media Institute in partnership with the National Press Club and the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School. For the eighth consecutive season, the series is underwritten by a grant from Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Since 1994, the partnership has produced 69 forums series with guests including Rupert Murdoch, Walter Cronkite, Christiane Amanpour, Katie Couric, Bob Costas, Ken Burns and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel. All forums offer open media coverage.
Douglas Brinkley is a professor of history at Rice University, fellow at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and best-selling author. His most recent publications include “The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America,” “The Reagan Diaries,” “The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast” and "Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War." He is the history commentator for CBS News and a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Times Book Review and American Heritage.
Sam Donaldson is a 43-year ABC News veteran who served two appointments as chief White House correspondent, covering Presidents Carter, Reagan and Clinton. Throughout his tenure at ABC, Mr. Donaldson held a number of positions including co-anchor of "This Week With Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts" from December 1996 to September 2002 and co-anchor of "PrimeTime Live" with Diane Sawyer from August 1989 to 1999.
Martha Joynt Kumar is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Towson University and author. Her books include the award-winning “Managing the President’s Message: The White House Communication Operation,” as well as “White House World: Transitions, Organization, and Office Operations” and “Portraying the President: The White House and the News Media” with Michael Grossman. She is director of the White House Transition Project and is currently on the board of directors and the executive committee of the White House Historical Association.
Moderator Marvin Kalb is a James Clark Welling Presidential Fellow at the George Washington University and Edward R. Murrow Professor Emeritus at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Over the course of his distinguished 30-year career in broadcast journalism, Mr. Kalb served as chief diplomatic correspondent for both CBS News and NBC News, and moderator of Meet the Press. He went on to serve as the founding director of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Among his many honors are two Peabody Awards, the DuPont Prize from Columbia University, the 2006 Fourth Estate Award from the National Press Club and more than a half-dozen Overseas Press Club awards.
Executive Producer Michael Freedman is a professor in the GW School of Media and Public Affairs and executive director of the GW Global Media Institute. A 30-year broadcast journalist, network executive, university administrator and professor, Mr. Freedman served as general manager of CBS Radio Network News, managing editor for the broadcast division of United Press International and vice president for communications at The George Washington University. Mr. Freedman is the recipient of more than 85 honors for journalistic excellence.
Producer Heather Date serves as associate director of the GW Global Media Institute. Ms. Date is a former CNN producer and a graduate of the GW School of Media and Public Affairs.
The Kalb Report series is directed by Robert Vitarelli, a 39-year CBS News veteran and a Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
