Philanthropist and businessman Paul David Pope talks about his family and the history of The National Enquirer in his new book “The Deeds of My Fathers: How My Grandfather and Father Built New York and Created the Tabloid World of Today.”
In the book, Pope — grandson of New York power broker Generoso Pope and son of The National Enquirer founder Gene Pope, Jr. — chronicles his grandfather’s rise from humble beginnings to New York power broker and his father’s founding of the tabloid.
The Enquirer often sold more than 5 million copies per week; circulation peaked in 1977 with nearly 7 million copies sold of its blockbuster issue on the death of Elvis Presley. After his father's death in 1988, Pope was the under-bidder in an auction that saw the Enquirer sold to the McFadden Group for $412.5 million.
