Description of Pictures: Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist on Another World
July 16, 2009 – January 13, 2010
On view are approximately 40 original paintings and drawings of the moon's landscape, fellow Apollo moonwalkers, and views of Earth from space by Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean, the fourth astronaut and only artist to walk on the lunar surface November 19, 1969. His works enable viewers to experience a world 238,000 miles away as seen first hand through his eyes. Also on view are artifacts from the museum's collection similar to the lunar equipment depicted in the paintings.
Organized to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the first Apollo Moon Landing on July 20, 1969.

1. SIAIBE_091004_001.JPG: Alan Bean: Painting Apollo First Artist on Another World Forty years ago, the Moon received its first human visitors. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle landed, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the lunar surface. To celebrate this 40th anniversary, this exhibition presents a view of the Apollo journeys through the eyes of the first artist to visit another world. Alan Bean became the fourth man to walk on the Moon during Apollo 12 in 1969. After 18 years as an astronaut, he resigned from NASA in 1981 to dedicate his life to the art of painting his memories of Apollo. Employing an impressionistic style, Bean captures the spirit of Apollo with lunar landscapes, portraits of fellow moonwalkers, and views of Earth from space. His works offer glimpses of a world on which only he and 11 others have walked. Displaying both art and artifacts, this exhibition weaves the technology of one of humankind's greatest achievements with an artist's firsthand account of a new frontier.

2009 photos: Equipment this year: I mostly used the Fuji S100fs. I've also got a Nikon D90 and a newer Fuji -- the S200EHX -- both of which are nice but I still prefer the flexibility of the Fuji. Trips this year: Niagara Falls, NY, New York City, Civil War Trust conferences in Gettysburg, PA and Springfield, IL, and my 4th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including Los Angeles, Yosemite, Death Valley, Kings Canyon, Joshua Tree, etc). Ego strokes: I had a picture of a Lincoln-Obama cupcake sculpture published in Civil War Times and WUSA-9, the local CBS affiliate, ran a quick piece on me. A picture that I took at the annual Abraham Lincoln Symposium appeared in the National Archives' "Prologue" magazine. I became a volunteer with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Number of photos taken this year: 417,000.
