Description of Pictures: Inside Media: Celebrate FotoWeek DC
From the jungles of Colombia to the centers of world power, photographers who can capture the iconic images of human emotions win the Pulitzer. Photographers from The Washington Post are among the most highly recognized in the industry. Meet five of these outstanding photojournalists as The Washington Post and the Newseum celebrate FotoWeek DC.
See Washington Post Pulitzer Prize winners Michel duCille, Carol Guzy, Matthew Lewis, Michael Williamson and Lucian Perkins as they present and discuss their award-winning work, and learn about the rewards and challenges of photojournalism.
* Michel duCille is the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, one for coverage of the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia in 1986, and another in 1988 for a photo essay that illuminated a crack cocaine problem in a Miami housing project.
* Carol Guzy, a registered nurse turned photojournalist, won her first Pulitzer when she and Michel duCille documented the aftermath of the volcanic eruption in Colombia in 1986. With a knack for highlighting "people’s most intimate moments — their joys and sorrows, their triumphs and tragedies," she won her second and third Pulitzers for her coverage of Haiti in 1995 and Kosovo in 2000.
* Matthew Lewis’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of John J. Wilson, the gruff yet charming attorney for former White House chief of staff H.R. (Bob) Haldeman, distills the lawyer’s multifaceted personality in the blink of an eye. About the art of the photograph, Lewis believes, "The great challenge is to communicate visually with impact what the story is about."
* As an author, Michael Williamson won a Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1990 for his clear-eyed look at the plight of the homeless with co-author Dale Maharidge. As a photojournalist, Williamson shared a second Pulitzer Prize with Carol Guzy and Lucian Perkins for their coverage of Kosovo in 2000.
* Lucian Perkins’s documentation of the effects on famili ...More...

Help? The Medium (Email) links are for screen viewing and emailing. You'll want bigger sizes for printing. [Click here for additional help]
Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.

2008 photos: Equipment this year: I was using three cameras -- the Fuji S9000 and the Canon Rebel Xti from last year, and a new camera, the Fuji S100fs. The first two cameras had their pluses and minuses and I really didn't have a single camera that I thought I could use for just about everything. But I loved the S100fs and used it almost exclusively this year.
Trips this year: (1) Civil War Preservation Trust annual conference in Springfield, Missouri , (2) a week in New York, (3) a week in San Diego for the Comic-Con, (4) a driving trip to St. Louis, and (5) a visit to dad and Dixie's in Asheville, North Carolina.
Ego strokes: A picture I'd taken last year during a Friends of the Homeless event was published in USA Today with a photo credit and everything! I became a volunteer photographer with the AFI/Silver theater.
Number of photos taken this year: 330,000.
