Paul Theroux initially pursued a career in medicine, but the allure of travel and his gift for writing led him in a different direction. He virtually reinvented the travel writing genre, beginning with The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia (1975) to his latest travel epic, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star: 28,000 Miles in Search of the Railway Bazaar (Houghton Mifflin, August 2008). Books about his trips across the world have all been best-sellers and won critical acclaim. In addition to his 15 works of nonfiction and criticism, he is the author of more than 25 books of fiction, including The Mosquito Coast and Half Moon Street, which have been made into successful feature films. He divides his time between Cape Cod and Hawaii.
