Description of Pictures: The Right Honorable Michael Ancram discussed "Isolation and Polarization - The West's Failing Agenda" at the Eisenhower Institute.
Mr. Ancram was Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office responsible for the peace process during the Major administration. From 2001-2005, he was Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party and he has also served as Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs and Shadow Secretary of State for Defense. When he stood down from the Front Bench, he was appointed by the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to the House of Commons Intelligence Select Committee. He maintains a keen interest in international affairs and defense matters and in 2006; he founded an independent foreign affairs think tank, Global Strategy Forum. His main areas of interest are the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan, the future of NATO and the Atlantic Alliance and the geopolitics of energy. A decade ago, he was the British Government Minister who opened dialogue in Northern Ireland with the IRA and he continues to study peace processes and the practice of talking to terrorists - "dancing with wolves", with particular reference to the Middle East peace process. He has recently returned from a number of visits to the Middle East (Syria, Beirut, Damascus and Jerusalem), where he has held a series of meetings with representatives from all sides concerned in the recent tensions.

Description of Subject Matter: The Eisenhower Institute is a distinguished center for leadership and public policy based in Washington, D.C. and in Gettysburg, PA. Honoring the legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower, The Eisenhower Institute prepares the successor generations to perfect the promise of the nation through engagement in distinctive programs of leadership and public policy.
A program of Gettysburg College, the Institute is a non-partisan, non-profit, presidential legacy organization that develops and sponsors civic discourse on significant issues of domestic and international public policy. Its activities include research and scholarship, education and outreach, and recognition and celebration. We strive to embody Eisenhower's model of public policy formation and leadership, and our programs encourage greater understanding of our core governmental institutions, bridging the perspectives of scholars, policy-makers, students, and citizens.
With offices in the heart of the nation's capital and in an historic home in Gettysburg once occupied by Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower, the Institute provides both top-level dialogue among policy-makers and a premier learning experience for undergraduates-by carefully blending the two.
The Institute is governed by a board of directors and has both a campus advisory council and a public advisory board. Among the programs of the EI are:
Public Policy Programs:
The Institute's public policy programs have a strong history in our nation's capital. With President Eisenhower as its model, the Institute pursues a domestic and international policy agenda driven by the rigorous pursuit of facts, respectful dialogue among stakeholders, and a focus on the future. Policy themes based on these objectives are chosen on a multi-year basis. Programming events include Washington roundtables, author events, lectures, policy discussions on Capitol Hill, and frequent outreach publications. Programs are offered on campus in Gettysburg and in Washington. Transportatio ...More...

2008 photos: Equipment this year: I was using three cameras -- the Fuji S9000 and the Canon Rebel Xti from last year, and a new camera, the Fuji S100fs. The first two cameras had their pluses and minuses and I really didn't have a single camera that I thought I could use for just about everything. But I loved the S100fs and used it almost exclusively this year.
Trips this year: (1) Civil War Preservation Trust annual conference in Springfield, Missouri , (2) a week in New York, (3) a week in San Diego for the Comic-Con, (4) a driving trip to St. Louis, and (5) a visit to dad and Dixie's in Asheville, North Carolina.
Ego strokes: A picture I'd taken last year during a Friends of the Homeless event was published in USA Today with a photo credit and everything! I became a volunteer photographer with the AFI/Silver theater.
Number of photos taken this year: 330,000.
