The word "panorama" comes from the Greek "to see all." For the most part, panoramic photographs are long, skinny images that offer a wide angle of view. This exhibit showcases panoramic photographs from the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The facsimile prints on display highlight many different types of panoramic prints and the unique cameras that made them. They also illustrate the wide variety of subjects found in the records.
NARA's panoramic photograph buildings present researchers with a unique opportunity "to see all." At NARA, researchers can study historic photographs and relevant supporting materials. From 1994 to 1997, NARA undertook a project to conserve, arrange, and describe approximately 2,500 panoramas previously unavailable to researchers because their poor condition prevented safe handling. Conservators flattened, mended, cleaned, and housed each photograph. After treatment, archivists prepared descriptions and finding aids.
This combination of treatment, housing, and archival preparation now allows these panoramas to be accessible to researchers for the first time. This exhibit celebrates the completion of the project.

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk.
