Description of Pictures: “The Breweries of Capitol Hill”: Not a trace of them remains today, but in the late 19th century Capitol Hill boasted two of Washington’s largest breweries, complete with beer gardens and brass bands. Please join us on Tuesday, February 7, for our next Overbeck History Lecture, as we figuratively raise a glass to these lively local enterprises from the days before Prohibition.

Our speaker will be Hill historian and Overbeck steering committee member Lucinda Janke, who has collected an array of images and other memorabilia of Washington’s once-booming breweries for the Heurich House Foundation.

A former curator of the Kiplinger Washington Collection and board member of the DC Historical Society, Cindy is a longtime explorer of the city’s past and co-author, with Ruth Ann Overbeck, of a groundbreaking study of one of Capitol Hill’s founding landowners, William Prout.

Description of Subject Matter: In keeping with our goal of building a stronger, kinder, more thoughtful community, the Capitol Hill Community Foundation has established the Ruth Ann Overbeck Capitol Hill History Project in order to give our neighborhood a better knowledge of its past and a deeper understanding of the everyday lives of its citizens.
The Project collects oral histories and other relevant materials and information from longtime Capitol Hill residents and former residents, to create a permanent, accessible, ongoing record of the people and events that have shaped our community. As a first priority, the collection effort is focusing on elderly residents whose stories may soon be lost, but its ultimate goal is a many-voiced narrative from across the generations, representing all walks of life and all races and backgrounds, that will illustrate the richly inter-connected life of our neighborhood over time.

2006 photos: Equipment this year: I was using all six Fuji cameras at various times -- an S602Zoom, two S7000s,a S5200, an S9000, and an S9100. The majority of pictures this year were taken with the S9000. I have to say, the S7000s was the best camera I've used up to this point.. Trips this year: Florida (two separate trips including Lotusphere and taking care of mom), three weeks out west (including Yellowstone), Williamsburg, San Diego (comic book convention), and Georgia. Number of photos taken this year: 183,000.
