Description of Pictures: Disneyland: The First 50 Years
June 9, 2005 – September 4, 2006
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Disneyland, two rides -- a big teacup from Alice's Mad Tea Party and Dumbo the Flying Elephant -- from the original theme park in Los Angeles, California, are on view.

1. SIAH50_050810_34.JPG: Dumbo, the flying baby elephant, originated in a 1939 children's book by author Helen Aberson and illustrator Harold Perl. Along with the Walt Disney Studio's 1941 animated film that bears the character's name, Dumbo also inspired a Dumbo ride, which endures as one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland. In operation at the park since August 1955, the ride features a circle of steel and fiberglass "elephant cars," each connected by a spoke to an ornately decorated hub. As the cars on their radial spokes ascend, visitors experience a spectacular aerial view of Fantasyland. The pink elephants in this early artist's drawing recall Dumbo's dream in the original film.

2005 photos: Equipment this year: I used four cameras -- two Fujifilm S7000 cameras (which were plagued by dust inside the lens), a new Fujifilm S5200 (nice but not great and I hated the proprietary xD memory chips), and a Canon PowerShot S1 IS (returned because it felt flimsy to me). I gave my Epson camera to my catsitter. Both of the S7000s were in for repairs over Christmas. Trips this year: Florida (for Lotusphere), a driving trip down south (seeing sites in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia), Williamsburg, and Chicago. Number of photos taken this year: 147,000.
