- Description of Pictures: Navy veteran and Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine joined the United States Navy Band as special guest narrator for the annual Navy Birthday Concert at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Although many remember him for his leading role in the popular series McHale’s Navy, he also has appeared in over 100 films and television series. Prior to his acting career, he spent 10 years in the Navy (1935-1945) and achieved the rank of Gunner’s Mate First Class. At the age of 88, he still maintains a busy schedule (currently, he is working on a film in Italy), and he continues to be a tireless supporter of the Navy.
The program, entitled "Victory at Sea," saluted the "greatest generation" who defended this nation throughout World War II. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael G. Mullen hosted the concert, and Captain Ralph M. Gambone led the men and women of the United States Navy Band, "Sea Chanters" chorus and "Commodores" jazz ensemble in this celebration of the Navy's 230th birthday.
Giving short talks were three World War II veterans. Eugene “Dutch” Albert, a musician, was present at the attack on Pearl Harbor. Captain Jack Crawford focused on the Atlantic campaigns. Dr. Stephen Cromwell, whose first action came as a corpsman landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day and who was in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender, was the funniest of the three. He said he went into the recruiting office. They suggested he would be a good cook. He asked about being a corpsman. They said they had 600 corpsman killed in the line of duty so there were immediate openings. He asked again about the cooking job...

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
