- Description of Pictures: An Evening with Robert Drew and From Two Men and a War: The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film at the National Archives and the Foundation for the National Archives present a celebration of the career of Robert Drew, who as the founder of Drew Associates pioneered the cinema verite documentary movement of the early 1960s with the groundbreaking film Primary. The evening will feature the Washington DC premiere of Drew Associates latest film, From Two Men and a War (2004, 62 mins.), which uses dramatic recreations and archival film and photographs to chronicle Robert Drew's experiences as a 19-year-old pilot with the 86th Fighter Bomber Group during World War II.
Les Waffen, Chief, Motion Picture, Sound & Video Branch of the Special Media Archives Services Division, will host and moderate a post screening Q&A session. Robert Drew will introduce the film and discuss the experiences that inspired the film.
On his 19th birthday, Robert Drew became the youngest fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was not alone. With him were two men who taught him not only how to stay alive but the power of storytelling: his father, also a pilot, and celebrated war correspondent Ernie Pyle. From Two Men and a War follows the filmmaker's combat experience as a young pilot. Narrated by Drew and interspersed with testimonies from family and fellow squadron members, the documentary tells the story of a young man fighting to survive. When he is shot down over German held Italy, Drew is forced to see from the ground the destruction the bombs dropped from his plane caused; this devastation was something no training could have prepared him for. Reenactments show his life-threatening escape on foot through the Italian mountainside and, after more than three months of evading capture, his reunion with his family. Though Drew survived, neither his father nor Ernie Pyle returned home. From Two Men and a War, Drew's poignant and personal story and his journey to develop a new art of quietly and compellingly telling the story, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, April 21 through May 1, 2005.
From Two Men and a War is produced by Anne Drew and directed by Robert Drew. Photographers for the film are Gianni Cigna, Marco Venditti and Anne Drew. Editors are Mike Woodworth, Jon Nealon and Robert Drew. Pamela Liebson is Associate Producer.
Welcoming remarks were provided by Grace Guggenheim, President, Guggenheim Productions, Inc.

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
