As part of this, there was a discussion about and reenactment of the resignation of George Washington as commander in chief of the colonial armies. (The discussion consisted of a dialog between Neal Conan and Whit Ridgeway in the modern Senate room of the state capitol.) On December 23, 1783, after the Treaty of Paris had ended the American Revolution, Washington resigned. There had been some concern that he would set up a monarchy under him, made less likely because he had no children. Washington established the precedence of civilian control over the military by stepping aside gracefully and then retreated back to Mount Vernon until the nation called on him again.
After the discussion, there was a very long presentation of dance and music from the era. We were sitting across from Mike Busch, the Maryland House Speaker, who's kids tried desperately to stay interested during the presentation.
