Description of Pictures: The official write-up of the event written by Victor Block with a preface by Tom Block:
Hi, everybody, here's the recap of this year's FOTHOC event that my Dad wrote up.
I might add a couple of things:
1) This was by far my worst year in terms of passing things out; people didn't want the bags; they asked for money, they were sullen and unappreciative. The other three cars had much more positive experiences.
2) People have been so monetarily generous that we will add thermal underwear (both tops and bottoms) and a fleece blanket next year.
3) We tried some new routes this year, but discovered that there weren't many people there -- the old routes, while we are sometimes duplicating other people's efforts, still seem to be the best.
4) For the third year, we are going to be giving away 100 coats on New Year's Day.
Thanks!
Tom

Twenty-six people, ranging in age from 4 to 71, unpacking boxes and placing individual items in gaily colored plastic bags.
Four cars winding through the streets of downtown Washington, occupants keeping their eyes peeled for anyone who looked like a homeless person who could use assistance – and a bit of joy.
Recipients of the gift bags, and the care and concern they represent, offering their thanks and blessings, shaking hands and in some cases giving bear hugs to those who dropped by to offer a bit of holiday help and cheer.
These are among images that stick in the minds of those who delivered 100 fully laden bags this Christmas morning. They represented the final stage in the 2004 operation FOTHOC (Friends of the Homeless on Christmas), which was conceived and launched by Tom Block and now is in its ninth year.
Everyone who supported, contributed to, and/or participated in any way in the ninth annual FOTHOC played a vital role. Hopefully, this report will enable those who could not take part in every aspect of the program to at least enjoy it vicariously.
As always, Tom and Debbie, and some oth ...More...

Description of Subject Matter: Friends of the Homeless on Christmas is an event that my neighbor Tom Block and his family organizes each year to deliver food and goodies to the homeless on Christmas. The goodies include an interesting assortment of things that, in most cases, were suggested by the homeless themselves. So they might include fleece blankets, thermal underwear, hats, gloves, radios (with batteries), playing cards, etc. The bags are filled on Christmas Eve day and then distributed on Christmas day. The intention is to reach the homeless who refuse to go to shelters -- the hard-core -- since these are the people who are most in need of assistance. It's a touching experience.
Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.

2004 photos: Equipment this year: I bought two Fujifilm S7000 digital cameras. While they produced excellent images, I found all of the retractable-lens Fuji models had a disturbing tendency to get dust inside the lens. Dark blurs would show up on the images and the camera had to be sent back to the shop in order to get it fixed. I returned one of the cameras when the blurs showed up in the first month. I found myself buying extended warranties on cameras.
Trips this year: (1) Margot and I went off to Scotland for a few days, my first time overseas. (2) I went to Hawaii on business (such a deal!) and extended it, spending a week in Hawaii and another in California. (3) I went to Tennessee to man a booth and extended it to go to my third Fan Fair country music festival.
Number of photos taken this year: 110,000.
