Description of Pictures: Sam M. Gibbons began his military service in June 1941 as part of the 101st Airborne Division. He led Parachute Infantry forces in the pre-dawn invasion of Normandy on D-Day. Elected to the Florida State House of Representatives in 1953, he served there until 1958; and from 1959 to 1963 served in the Florida State Senate. In 1962 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served until 1997, becoming Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee in 1993.

Gary Rhay enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in Vietnam in 1971-72. In 1996 he became in-house historian at Marathon Music and Video, which has a veterans’ oral history program that predates the Library of Congress project. The Marathon archive holds approximately 700 to 750 videotaped interviews, and is an official partner of the Veterans History Project.

Beverly Lindsey is the Director of the Veterans History Project at the American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress. She was involved with the Project for three years as consultant on development, communications and outreach issues before assuming her current position. She has worked in the past with arts and humanities programs at the local, state and national level, as well as served on the Advisory Council of the National Endowment for Humanities.

2004 photos: Equipment this year: I bought two Fujifilm S7000 digital cameras. While they produced excellent images, I found all of the retractable-lens Fuji models had a disturbing tendency to get dust inside the lens. Dark blurs would show up on the images and the camera had to be sent back to the shop in order to get it fixed. I returned one of the cameras when the blurs showed up in the first month. I found myself buying extended warranties on cameras. Trips this year: (1) Margot and I went off to Scotland for a few days, my first time overseas. (2) I went to Hawaii on business (such a deal!) and extended it, spending a week in Hawaii and another in California. (3) I went to Tennessee to man a booth and extended it to go to my third Fan Fair country music festival. Number of photos taken this year: 110,000.
