Description of Pictures: The National Zoo’s had three male Sumatran tiger cubs born on May 2, 2004. They went on public exhibit in August, 2004, weighing about 30 pounds.
They are the third generation of Sumatran tigers at the National Zoo. They join a multi-generational family at the National Zoo that includes their brother, mother, father and grandmother. The first generation is Kerinci, mother of Soyono, who is the cubs’ mother. The three males are the second litter for Soyono. Her first litter consisted of one male cub, Berani, born in September 2001; he will be three years old this fall. The sire of both litters, Rokan, also lives at the National Zoo. Male tigers do not stay with the female after mating, and do not participate in rearing the cubs.
Sumatran tigers are an endangered species, found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in habitat that ranges from lowland forest to mountain forest. Fewer than 500 Sumatran tigers are believed to exist in the wild and approximately 200 live in zoos around the world. Sumatran tigers are the smallest tiger subspecies, weighing between 200 and 300 pounds when full-grown.
Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) sponsored a public contest to name the cubs. The names are as follows, loosely translated from Indonesian:
Marah (MAR-ah) – angry or fierce
Jalan (JA-lan) – journey or road
Besar (BA-sar) – big or mighty
(The above description was taken from the FONZ site at http://www.fonz.org.)

Description of Subject Matter: This section is used on this site and may include several animals: lions, tigers, cheetahs, ocelots, etc.
Cheetahs: Tumai, the Zoo's four-year-old cheetah, gave birth to a litter of two male and two female cubs on November 23, 2004. This is the first litter of cheetah cubs ever born at the National Zoo in its 115-year history. Animal-care staff say the cubs are quite playful and in excellent health. Veterinarians examine the cubs every two weeks and weighed them at about nine to nine and a half pounds each on February 1. They went on public display on February 5. Each cub has had a small patch shaved in a different place (on the right shoulder or left leg, for example) so staff can tell them apart. They have started eating meat but are still nursing.

I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.

2004 photos: Equipment this year: I bought two Fujifilm S7000 digital cameras. While they produced excellent images, I found all of the retractable-lens Fuji models had a disturbing tendency to get dust inside the lens. Dark blurs would show up on the images and the camera had to be sent back to the shop in order to get it fixed. I returned one of the cameras when the blurs showed up in the first month. I found myself buying extended warranties on cameras.
Trips this year: (1) Margot and I went off to Scotland for a few days, my first time overseas. (2) I went to Hawaii on business (such a deal!) and extended it, spending a week in Hawaii and another in California. (3) I went to Tennessee to man a booth and extended it to go to my third Fan Fair country music festival.
Number of photos taken this year: 110,000.
