1. MHNIKE_041103_010.JPG: They'd have to don these protective suits when they were in the bunkers because the blast from the rockets was so intense.
2. MHNIKE_041103_023.JPG: These would be connected to the fire control station, which was located in the distance.
3. MHNIKE_041103_028.JPG: When I first saw these, I thought they were real and decided to not ask for driving directions after all.
4. MHNIKE_041103_099.JPG: Marin Headlands Nike Missile Site in San Francisco
5. MHNIKE_041103_119.JPG: The missiles would come up a single elevator and then be pushed along these railings which would serve as launch platforms. Six Hercules missiles could be positions here at a time. They would all be launched together as the afterburn from one would have destroyed the ones next to it.
6. MHNIKE_041103_123.JPG: Sentry post. As security being of the highest nature, this post was manned at all times. Armed guards turned back anyone without written permission. Sentries stayed inside this booth at night while attack dogs patrolled the outside perimeter of the launch area.

8. MHNIKE_041103_149.JPG: A view from the top. The two tracks are the launcher area. The magazines where the missiles are stored are underground. Notice there is a fence and then an inner fence. This is where sentry dogs would patrol, with training to kill anyone who got between those fences. Their kennel was the pink building just behind the fence.

SF-88 is a former Nike Missile launch site at Fort Barry, in the Marin Headlands to the north of San Francisco, California, U.S. Opened in 1954, the site was intended to protect the population and military installations of the San Francisco Bay Area during the Cold War, specifically from attack by Soviet bomber aircraft. The site was originally armed with Nike Ajax missiles, and modifications were made to the site in 1958 to allow it to also be armed with Nike Hercules missiles. In 1974, SF-88 was closed, but was not demolished. It is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to visitors. Normal visiting days are Wednesday-Friday, but a special tour with veterans of the base is available the first Sunday of each month. Restoration work to the site is done on Saturdays by anyone willing to volunteer.

2004 photos: Equipment this year: I bought two Fujifilm S7000 digital cameras. While they produced excellent images, I found all of the retractable-lens Fuji models had a disturbing tendency to get dust inside the lens. Dark blurs would show up on the images and the camera had to be sent back to the shop in order to get it fixed. I returned one of the cameras when the blurs showed up in the first month. I found myself buying extended warranties on cameras. Trips this year: (1) Margot and I went off to Scotland for a few days, my first time overseas. (2) I went to Hawaii on business (such a deal!) and extended it, spending a week in Hawaii and another in California. (3) I went to Tennessee to man a booth and extended it to go to my third Fan Fair country music festival. Number of photos taken this year: 110,000.
