Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
BRIDGE_030628_005.JPG: This shot is from the art school which did the mural. The view from their window shows the piece Archangel from one of the two vantage points where it seems to be in normal proportions.
BRIDGE_030628_014.JPG: The art school had a display going on. This was my favorite! "View from the Gallows" by John Hay.
BRIDGE_030628_023.JPG: Mural Bridge in Frederick. (There are lots of other pictures of this on that page.)
BRIDGE_030628_026.JPG: The mural bridge was put up in 1993 and now, ten years later, it's starting to show some signs of natural decay. This part is caused by leaking water from the bridge above.
BRIDGE_030628_042.JPG: Interestingly, these same geese were also presented as part of the farm scene in the previous picture.
BRIDGE_030628_069.JPG: That's the art school in the background
BRIDGE_030628_103.JPG: There were three pieces that had been vandalized with graffiti when I was there. The baby suckling, the Lincoln head penny, and the sun profile all had been visited by a magic marker "artist" (who, judging by the Lincoln penny addition, looks like he was 12 years old or so).
BRIDGE_030628_119.JPG: I don't know why but I seem to have a tradition of taking my shoes off and putting them outside the painted gate.
BRIDGE_030628_122.JPG: These two were photographing this doll in a boat on the canal for some art class. They had a fishing line tied in front in case the boat blew across to the other side.
Description of Subject Matter: The Community Bridge in Frederick, Maryland was the idea of William Cochran. In 1993, he proposed taking a plain concrete bridge, called the Carroll Street Bridge, and turning it into a work of art. He surveyed the city to find out what sort of symbols they'd like to see. He took their ideas and incorporated them as "carvings" painted into the bridge. It's a technique called "trompe l'oeil" ("deceive the eye"). It's a really neat effect since it's art pretending it's stone work. Of course they have their own Web site at http://bridge.skyline.net which not only describes all of the images but even tells you who suggested them.
Bigger photos? To save server space, the full-sized versions of these images have either not been loaded to the server or have been removed from the server. (Only some pages are loaded with full-sized images and those usually get removed after three months.)
I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.

2003 photos: Equipment this year: I decided my Epson digital camera wasn't quite enough for what I wanted. Since I already had Compact Flash chips for it, I had to find another camera which used CF chips. That brought me to buy the Fujifilm S602 Zoom in March 2003. A great digital camera, I used it exclusively for an entire year.
Trips this year: Three-week trip this year out west, mostly in Utah.
Number of photos taken this year: 68,000.
