On April 24, he was fired by Fox in the wake of the Dominion Voting Systems settlement. One of his quotes before it was revealed that he was pushing the voting conspiracy lie to protect Fox's market share was "I have no time for political hacks who say things they don't believe because they get paid to." Nor does most of America.

NPCBF_031112_077.JPG: Robert H Bork ("Coercing Virtue: The Worldwide Rule of Judges") @ National Press Club's Book Fair.
He had been US Solicitor General under Nixon and was promoting a book about how liberal judges were undermining the other branches of the federal government. According to the Washington Post ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/onpolitics/watergate/robertbork.html ): A famous conservative, Robert Bork was Nixon's solicitor general and became acting attorney general during the "Saturday Night Massacre." Nixon, fearing that Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox was close to uncovering the truth about his involvement in Watergate (Cox was requesting tapes of Oval Office conversations), ordered then-Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Cox. The unwilling Richardson resigned, and Nixon passed his order on to Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus, who also refused, and resigned. Nixon then turned to Bork, who carried out his wishes. Still, the firing would turn out only to be a stopgap. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that Nixon had to present the infamous tapes. Bork went on to become embroiled in further political controversy. In 1987, when he was a U.S. Appeals Court judge, then-President Ronald Reagan nominated him for the Supreme Court. Senate Democrats, wary of his conservative philosophy and positions on abortion, affirmative action and First Amendment rights, rejected his nomination.

NPCBF_031112_089.JPG: Lord Conrad Black, still being interviewed
NPCBF_031112_091.JPG: Lord Conrad Black ("Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom") @ National Press Club's Book Fair.
I had never heard of this person but he's a newspaper mogul and he was being interviewed constantly. When I bought his book, he was warm and friendly and talked at length about Roosevelt. A Canadian, he became a British citizen so he could accept a position in the House of Lords. According to FAIR ( http://www.fair.org/extra/9611/conrad-black.htm ): His company, Hollinger Inc., is now the third largest newspaper chain in the Western world, after Gannett and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation (New York Times, 6/24/96), with a combined circulation exceeding 10 million (James Winter, Democracy's Oxygen). Black owns 650 dailies and weeklies around the world, including the Jerusalem Post, the London Daily Telegraph, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Chicago Sun Times. ... He now controls 42 percent of Canada's daily circulation (Maclean's, 7/8/96), and most of the large papers outside of Toronto (Toronto Star, 6/28/96). According to David Robinson, research director at the Council of Canadians, these assets include 70 percent of Ontario's newspapers, almost every paper in British Columbia, and all the papers in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. ...Black's [management] is usually described as ruthless. ... Maude Barlow, chair of the Council of Canadians, describes a typical takeover by Black's Hollinger this way (CounterSpin, 8/15/96): "They fire half the staff, they get rid of the environment reporters and the social affairs and the education and health reporters, and they replace them with businesspeople --or they don't replace them at all.... Anyone not singing that very right-wing Newt Gingrich type of... line is soon let go."
The interesting thing, however, is that on Nov. 17, 2003 (just five days later), Black announced he would step down as CEO of U.S.-based newspaper conglomerate Hollinger International. The move followed findings of a special committee that Black and other senior Hollinger executives received $32.15 million in unauthorized payments. That could be why he was being interviewed so much.

Description of Subject Matter: The National Press Club puts on an annual author's night, bringing in perhaps 35 authors to talk about and sign copies of their new books. The list of authors varies each year based on publishing schedules but I've seen an amazing variety of people there each time. Funds raised by the Book Fair will benefit the Press Club's Eric Friedheim Library and News Information Center, a resource for journalists around the world.

2003 photos: Equipment this year: I decided my Epson digital camera wasn't quite enough for what I wanted. Since I already had Compact Flash chips for it, I had to find another camera which used CF chips. That brought me to buy the Fujifilm S602 Zoom in March 2003. A great digital camera, I used it exclusively for an entire year.
Trips this year: Three-week trip this year out west, mostly in Utah.
Number of photos taken this year: 68,000.
