Description of Pictures: While the Earth Day activities under the Bush administration were minimal, there was an activity scheduled for the State Department that I was interested in attending. I really wanted to see the bald eagle they were going to have on display. Sure enough, Mike Callahan, a naturalist from the Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center and Irene, a student volunteer, set up a wonderful display. Nanjemoy is part of the Charles County Public School system. Their web site is http://www.ccboe.com/nanjemoy. They brought out five birds. The first was an Eastern Screech Owl which looked a lot like a Furby. Then there was a Barred Owl, a Red-Tailed Hawk, a Barn Owl, and then a Bald Eagle. Along with various bird calls, Mike explained what physical catastrophe resulted in the birds being part of their center. Some of the birds had been hit by cars (a couple were missing wings) while others were psychological basket case. After the formal presentation, they brought the Eastern Screech Owl again and let people put in on their gloved hand. In the middle of that, Secretary of State Colin Powell came out and got to hold it as well. I took a bunch of pictures, in large part because I'm just obsessive but also because individual owl holders as well as the nature center itself were going to want copies.

EARTH_030422_119.JPG: Periodically, if the birds start getting hot, they're sprayed with a water bottle.
EARTH_030422_150.JPG: Barn Owl
EARTH_030422_197.JPG: Enter the Bald Eagle. Mike said this was the bird's first public appearance since the center got him. They tried to feed him a few dead mice but he wasn't in the mood.
EARTH_030422_248.JPG: This being the first public appearance of the eagle, I asked Irene to come and pose in a number of pictures with it. Unfortunately, the eagle was such a handful that I wasn't able to get Mike to pose with her.
EARTH_030422_273.JPG: This happened a lot with the eagle. They're on tethers and if they try to jump or fly away, they end up swinging like this.
EARTH_030422_302.JPG: This is where the State Department staffers were allowed to hold the Eastern Screech Owl again. The bird was very light but a lot of people were afraid of it.
EARTH_030422_313.JPG: Secretary of State Colin Powell came out and got to hold the Eastern Screech Owl as well.

I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.
2003 photos: Equipment this year: I decided my Epson digital camera wasn't quite enough for what I wanted. Since I already had Compact Flash chips for it, I had to find another camera which used CF chips. That brought me to buy the Fujifilm S602 Zoom in March 2003. A great digital camera, I used it exclusively for an entire year.
Trips this year: Three-week trip this year out west, mostly in Utah.
Number of photos taken this year: 68,000.
