Description of Pictures: Mort Walker was at the computer conference to promote a new IT-based character who was going to start appearing in the Beetle Bailey strip later in the year. The character was unnamed at the time of the show and there was a contest to name him. Spec. Chip Gizmo debuted in the strip on July 4.
Mort was also signing various "Beetle Bailey" books in exchange for donations to the Fisher House charity.

An Army information technology officer will sign up with Gen. Halftrack and the Camp Swampy crew this week. The new character in the 52-year-old Beetle Bailey cartoon strip will debut at the FOSE 2002 trade show, running March 19-21 at the Washington, D.C., Convention Center.
Will the IT officer become Sarge's constant dining companion? Miss Buxley's new love interest? Beetle's foil? Will he bring new tech savvy to the gang? Ask strip creator Mort Walker, who will appear with the new character at the Beetle Bailey booth March 21. The new character will be on display all three days of the show.
More than 17,000 government and military IT professionals are expected to attend FOSE 2002, the nation's largest and most comprehensive technology exhibition for the government.
A contest to pick the name and rank of the IT officer will kick off at the FOSE show. Walker will choose the winner, whose name will be mentioned in the first cartoon featuring the new character.
All entries placed at FOSE 2002 will be entered into a drawing for a one-year lease on a new Jeep Wrangler. The drawing for the Jeep will take place at FOSE March 21.
FOSE 2002 attendees stopping at the Beetle Bailey booth can get their picture taken with Beetle Bailey characters for a donation to the Fisher House, a nonprofit organization providing support to military families durin ...More...

2002 photos: Image quality isn't going to be very good for the first half of this year because these are scans of prints.
Equipment this year: I took the plunge and bought my first digital camera. It was August 2002 and I bought an Epson PhotoPC 3100Z. While a nice camera, it had some quirks and bumping it would result in it being totally out of focus until you manually shut it down -- something which blurred almost every picture I took in New York City one day.
Trips this year: Two weeks out west, one week in New York, and one week down south.
This was the year I started the photo web site. It started to come together in August 2002, mostly as a way of allowing me to keep track of the pictures I was taking. It took awhile to add some basic bells and whistles (logging didn't get added until November) but it's been pretty much like it started out since then. Archaic but working, and free!
