USTR_021205_02.JPG: Built in 1848, the Winder Building was named after General William Winder. If you've never heard of him it's because he's the American general whose claim-to-fame is losing the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814 which allowed the British to take over Washington DC and burn it to the ground. During the Civil War, it provided office space for the Union's biggest generals from Winfield Scott to Ulysses Grant. Located just across the street from the Old Executive Office Building and thus the White House, Lincoln was here a lot. In 1861, this was the scene of the first meeting between Winfield Scott and Robert E Lee where Scott offered Lee command of the Union army. Later on, Francis Blair met again with Lee, this time at the Blair House, and asked him to please decide the issue. Lee considered but Virginia seceded so Lee quit the Army and joined the Confederacy. When Lincoln was assassinated, the Winder Building served as the command headquarters for the efforts to capture and try John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators. I worked in this building for several years when I was with the Office of the US Trade Representative.

The Winder Building is an office building in Washington, D.C., just west of the White House. It is located at 604 17th Street, Northwest, Washington, D.C..
History
It was designed by Richard A. Gilpin, (or Robert Mills), for W. H. Winder, a nephew of Gen. William H. Winder. It was leased as government offices. The government purchased it in 1854 for $200,000. It was originally covered in stucco, which was stripped and brick painted. The windows have been replaced. The building is maintained by General Services Administration and occupied by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, since 1981.
It was threatened with demolition in 1974. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

2002 photos: This was the year I started the photo web site. It started to come together in August 2002, mostly as a way of allowing me to keep track of the pictures I was taking. It took awhile to add some basic bells and whistles (logging didn't get added until November) but it's been pretty much like it started out since then. Archaic but working, and free!
Trips this year: Two weeks out west, one week in New York, and one week down south.
Image quality isn't going to be very good for the first half of this year because these are scans of prints.
Equipment this year: I took the plunge and bought my first digital camera. It was August 2002 and I bought an Epson PhotoPC 3100Z. While a nice camera, it had some quirks and bumping it would result in it being totally out of focus until you manually shut it down -- something which blurred almost every picture I took in New York City one day.
