NEWSFP_011007_02.JPG: This is the description of the memorial from the Newseum page at http://www.freedomforum.org/templates/document.asp?documentID=4000 The Journalists Memorial, standing at the highest point of Freedom Park in Arlington, Va., overlooks the monuments of Washington, D.C. It is 24 feet tall and made of dichroic glass. The Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial honors reporters, editors, photographers and broadcasters who gave their lives reporting the news. Veronica Guerin died covering organized crime in Ireland. Elijah Lovejoy died crusading against slavery; Ernie Pyle, covering World War II from the front; Don Bolles, exposing corruption. Around the world, journalists have placed themselves in peril. Thousands simply disappeared, victims of cruel regimes. Their names are lost to history. Those named here intone their collective legacy: They fought and died in the battle to report the truth. The Memorial is a central feature of Freedom Park, adjacent to The Freedom Forum Newseum and The Freedom Forum World Center headquarters in Arlington.

Freedom Park is an outdoor museum in Arlington, Virginia. It was founded in 1996 to celebrate the spirit of freedom and the struggle to preserve it. The Freedom Park is a joint-venture with the Newseum and Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial, both operated by the Freedom Forum.

Exhibits include stones from the Warsaw Ghetto, a headless statue of Vladimir Lenin (one of many that were beheaded when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991), and a bronze cast of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birmingham jail-cell door. In addition, the park features a bronze casting of a boat used by Cuban refugees, as well as a casting of a South African ballot box from the apartheid era. The park includes pieces of the Berlin Wall — the largest display of the wall outside of Germany. A reproduction of "Freedom," the statue that caps the dome of the United States Capitol, is also on display.

2001 photos: Image quality is going to be pretty bad because these are scans of negatives and prints. They were usually taken on a Pentax ME-Super. This was the year of 9/11 and many of the places that had been commonplace to visit beforehand suddenly became a pain in the neck or not available at all. I took a two-week trip right before 9/11 in New England and then took a one-week trip afterward to North Carolina.
