MA -- Cape Cod -- Whale-watching trip off the coast:

Description of Pictures: While I was bored silly in Cape Cod, some couple suggested that I take a whale-watching boat trip. I presumed that these things were mostly jokes--I mean, what chance do you actually have of seeing a whale?, but they said they had been on a trip the other day and several whales had come up next to the boat. When I had been in Acadia National Park, I talked to someone who had been on a number of boat trips around there and seen her share of animals. So I figured what the heck.
The wind that day was blowing pretty hard and the waves were very choppy. The boat crew recommended taking Dramamine just in case. While the boat was pulling in with the people from the previous trip, I watched them mopping vomit off the side of the ship. I took the pill.
After a very bouncy ride, the naturalist said she could see whale water spouts (where they push the water out of the blow spouts) ahead and off we went. I was impressed! The naturalist said that it was feeding season and estimated that we saw about twenty humpback and minke (?) whales out there. There were whales leaping, spouting, and waving with their fins. Some were as close as twenty feet of the ship. Taking photos was a considerable challenge because you usually couldn't figure out where to look for them and they'd already be going back under by the time you managed to focus on them but I got some wonderful photos. It's hard to imagine creatures that big swimming through the water and jumping like that. Very beautiful! And they used to hunt these things for oil. Shudder!

I still have them though. If you want me to email them to you, please send an email to guthrie.bruce@gmail.com
and I can email them to you, or, depending on the number of images, just repost the page again will the full-sized images.

2001 photos: Image quality is going to be pretty bad because these are scans of negatives and prints. They were usually taken on a Pentax ME-Super.
This was the year of 9/11 and many of the places that had been commonplace to visit beforehand suddenly became a pain in the neck or not available at all. I took a two-week trip right before 9/11 in New England and then took a one-week trip afterward to North Carolina.
