1. MAGIC_970303_001.JPG: WDW; Animal Kingdom model This is the model for Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park which will open in 1998. It includes a lot of live animals and has been sucking curators out of the various national zoos since it was announced. The "Tree of Life" is in the middle of the model.
2. MAGIC_970303_002.JPG: WDW; Carousel of Progress This is the central character from the GE Carousel of Progress ride at the Magic Kingdom. He later shows up in one of the rides at EPCOT.
3. MAGIC_970303_003.JPG: WDW; Sleeping Beauty's Castle (as cake) Sleeping Beauty's Castle, dressed up like a birthday cake, in honor of Walt Disney World's 25th anniversary. This view was taken from Main Street.
4. MAGIC_970303_004.JPG: WDW; Fire House w/101 Dalmations This is a close up of the firehouse in the Main Street area. The characters from "101 Dalmations" have been added all over the roofs.
5. MAGIC_970303_005.JPG: WDW; Walt and Mickey as Partners "It all started with a mouse" is one of the slogans for Walt Disney World. Here is a statue called "Partners", which features Walt Disney leading Mickey Mouse forward. Behind them is the 25th Anniversary version of Sleeping Beauty's Castle.

The Magic Kingdom is a theme park covering 107 acres (433,000 m�) at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando. It is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company, through its Walt Disney Parks and Resorts unit. Opened on October 1, 1971, it is the most famous Florida theme park and is credited with beginning the Floridian tourism boom. Its layout and attractions are generally similar to those of Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and the park was designed and built by WED Enterprises.

Areas of the Magic Kingdom:
The park contained twenty-three attractions on the day it opened, twenty of them copies of attractions at Disneyland. Today the park map lists forty-eight attractions (though several of these, like the Guest Information Board, probably shouldn't be included in the number) in seven themed "lands."

The Walt Disney World Railroad runs along the perimeter of the park and makes stops at Main Street, Frontierland, and Mickey's Toontown Fair.

Main Street, U.S.A.:

Main Street is lined with shops selling merchandise and food. The decor is early-20th century small-town America, inspired by Walt Disney's childhood. City Hall contains the Guest Relations lobby where cast members provide information and assistance. A real working barber shop gives haircuts for a fee. 1997 photos: Since 1984, I've lived in Silver Spring, Maryland. From 1981 to 2002, photos were taken using a Pentax ME Super camera. From 1989 to 2002, I was doing all pictures as prints (instead of slides which I had grown up on). In 1997, at the age of 40, my photo obsession began and I started taking thousands of photos per year. In September, 2002, I switched to digital cameras and the number of photos exploded. Image quality is going to be variable because these are scans of slides and/or prints. The images shown here were scanned in two phases. In the early years of the website, I rescanned a selection of pre-digital images, all at fairly low quality settings. During the COVID pandemic, I launched the Great Rescanning Effort, rescanning ALL of my pre-digital images from various media (prints, slides, negatives, etc) at higher resolution and quality settings. Mutilple versions of images -- some from the initial scannning phase, some from prints, some from slides/negatives -- were posted so there are frequently duplicate images on the same page. At some point, I hope to have time to do a final review and get rid of the duplicates but that'll have to wait until all of the pre-digital images are finally posted. Trips this year: North Carolina (Dad), Florida (Mom), using a time share in Arkansas to visit Civil War sites in Missouri, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. The Civil War became my excuse to see places I'd never been to in my life and it was a great motivator for 20 years or so.
